Air Quality Warning Hits Chester County as Particulate Pollution Spikes

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a Code Red Air Quality Action Day on Thursday, warning that fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, has climbed to levels considered unhealthy across the state, including in Chester County. Unlike ozone-related alerts, particulate pollution can stem from sources like wildfire smoke, traffic emissions, and industrial output, and it poses a health risk to nearly everyone, not just sensitive groups.
Officials emphasized that while the entire population is at some risk, children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing asthma, lung disease, or heart conditions are particularly susceptible to serious complications. Even brief periods of outdoor exertion could aggravate symptoms in these groups.
Residents were advised to monitor their own physical responses throughout the day and to reduce prolonged outdoor activity, especially during peak pollution hours in the afternoon. Specific warning signs include wheezing, a persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness or a burning sensation, and asthma flare-ups. Anyone experiencing these symptoms was encouraged to move indoors promptly and consult a medical professional if conditions do not improve.
Meals on Wheels Seeks Volunteer Drivers

WEST CHESTER, PA — Meals on Wheels of Chester County is seeking new volunteer drivers to serve the West Bradford Township route, part of an effort that depends almost entirely on community members willing to give a small amount of their time each month. The role requires fewer than three hours monthly, organizers said, making it a manageable option even for those juggling busy schedules.
The organization currently relies on close to 600 volunteers countywide, all of whom use their own cars and cover their own fuel costs to deliver meals to homebound residents. Beyond food, officials say these visits often provide a rare moment of social connection for clients, along with reassurance for family members who may not be able to check in as often as they'd like.
Those interested in learning more about the program, or ready to sign up, are urged to contact the Meals on Wheels office at 610-430-8500.
Caln Township Prepares for Annual National Night Out Celebration

CALN TWP — Caln Township is preparing for its upcoming National Night Out event, a community celebration organized in partnership with the township's police department, professional firefighters, and Parks and Recreation Department. Scheduled for next month, the event aims to foster stronger relationships between residents and the public safety officials who serve them.
Attendees can expect a full slate of activities, including live musical entertainment, face painting, lawn games, and hands-on displays from local police and fire personnel. A highlight of the evening will be a vehicle extrication demonstration, offering residents a glimpse into the techniques emergency crews use during rescue situations. Weather permitting, a JeffSTAT medical helicopter is also expected to land at the event, giving the community an up-close view of the aircraft.
Adding a ceremonial touch, a Veterans of Foreign Wars color guard will take part in the festivities. Families with children can also look forward to appearances by costumed characters, courtesy of Birthday Buddies Inc., adding a lighthearted element to the community gathering. National Night Out is held annually in communities across the country as a way to promote neighborhood unity and build trust between residents and local law enforcement.
Chester County Honors Dr. Robert Fleming for Five Decades of Public Safety Leadership

WEST CHESTER, PA — County commissioners recognized Dr. Robert Fleming this week with an honorary citation celebrating a public service career that spanned five decades. The recognition, presented during a public board meeting in West Chester, centered on Fleming's leadership of the Chester County Local Emergency Planning Committee, which he led from 1992 to 2025.
The committee is part of a national network of federally mandated local planning bodies established after Congress passed hazardous materials legislation in the 1980s, later reinforced by Pennsylvania state law. These committees are responsible for developing emergency response plans, reviewing them annually, and keeping residents informed about hazardous materials present in their communities.
Fleming's public service extended well beyond the planning committee. He held roles with the county's Citizen Corps Council, its 911 Independent Review Commission, its Emergency Medical Services Council, and its Mitigation Committee, and advocated for the creation of the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus. His influence reached communities across the Brandywine Valley, including West Chester, West Goshen, West Whiteland, and Coatesville, and extended to state and federal emergency services committees as well.
