Puppies Abandoned on Chester County Road, Police Seek Suspects Seen Fleeing in SUV

SOUTHERN CHESTER COUNTY, PA — County authorities are seeking information after two puppies, each about four months old, were abandoned along Clay Creek Road near Garden Station Road in London Grove Township on the evening of June 30. Witnesses told investigators they saw the animals left along the roadside between 8:30 and 9 p.m., after which two unidentified individuals drove off heading north in a small to medium-sized SUV, described as blue or gray and possibly a Subaru. The puppies were subsequently evaluated and are now in the care of Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. Pennsylvania State Police have not identified any suspects and are continuing to investigate the case as a possible act of animal cruelty. Residents with information are urged to contact Trooper Field, the department's animal cruelty liaison, at PSP Avondale, or to submit a tip anonymously through the state police tip line.

West Bradford Township Tops 1,000 Acres of Preserved Open Space

WEST BRADFORD TWP — West Bradford Township announced this week that it has surpassed 1,000 acres of permanently preserved open space, a milestone reached only a few years into its conservation program. The achievement follows the recent acquisition of a property at 1246 Telegraph Road, one of several preservation projects the township currently has underway. Officials emphasized that the progress was made possible largely through the voluntary participation of local landowners who chose to place their land under permanent protection rather than through government acquisition alone. Township leaders expressed gratitude to residents and property owners who supported the initiative, framing it as a community-driven success. The announcement was made ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Swedesford Road to Close for a Month as PennDOT Repairs Aging Bridge

MALVERN, PA — PennDOT has announced a monthlong closure of Swedesford Road in East Whiteland Township, set to begin Wednesday, July 15, and continue through Friday, Aug. 14, weather permitting. The closure will affect the stretch of road between Route 401 (Conestoga Road) and Route 29 (Morehall Road) and will remain in effect around the clock. During construction, drivers will be directed to use a detour route via Route 401, Business U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue), and Route 29. While local access will be preserved, officials are warning commuters to expect delays and increased traffic, especially during rush hours. The closure is necessary to rehabilitate the 57-year-old bridge carrying Swedesford Road over the Chester Valley Trail, a structure that spans 38 feet, measures 49 feet wide, and handles more than 9,000 vehicles each day. Planned work includes a latex-modified concrete overlay, deck joint resealing, and substructure repairs. The project is part of a broader $16.2 million PennDOT effort to rehabilitate 14 bridges spanning Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Motorists are advised to stay alert for detour signage and construction activity throughout the closure period.

Caln Township Adds New Rescue Engine to Modernize Fire Response

CALN TWP — Caln Township has added a new rescue vehicle, Squad 38, to its fire and emergency response fleet, replacing an aging engine that had been out of service since March due to rising maintenance costs and reliability issues. The new apparatus, a 2025 Pierce Enforcer equipped with specialized rescue tools, will work alongside the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Company, which has served the area since 1939. The upgrade follows the township's 2024 decision to establish professional fire and rescue staffing to support the volunteer company amid a growing volume of emergency calls, including 719 fire calls in 2025 alone. Squad 38 was funded through the Caln Township Board of Commissioners, and officials opted to purchase a demonstration unit to avoid lengthy wait times typically associated with new apparatus orders. The acquisition is part of a broader, long-term fleet replacement initiative led by Director of Building and Life Safety Raymond Stackhouse and Thorndale Fire Chief Patrick Taylor, which includes plans for a new custom engine to arrive in 2027, replacing the current 2015 Engine 38. Township officials also expressed gratitude to neighboring fire companies for providing coverage and equipment while local apparatus was serviced.
