From Red Carpet to Rescue: 60 Shelter Dogs Find New Hope in Chester County

WEST CHESTER, PA — Brandywine Valley SPCA welcomed more than 60 rescued dogs and puppies to Chester County this week, the latest leg of a rescue effort that began in Southern California. The animals, transported from overcrowded shelters in Riverside County, first made an appearance at the Astra TV Awards in Los Angeles, where several were walked down the red carpet by celebrities as part of a push to raise awareness for shelter adoption. Those not placed in California were flown to Pennsylvania in what officials called the county's largest shelter-dog transport of the year. After landing at Chester County Airport in Coatesville, the dogs were taken to the SPCA's West Chester campus for medical checks and evaluations. The program, called Second Chance, aims to ease overcrowding in high-euthanasia-risk shelters by relocating adoptable dogs to regions with greater capacity for adoption. Officials say some dogs may be ready for new homes as soon as this week, with animals eventually spread across multiple SPCA locations to reach more prospective families.

"Night of Light" to Honor Lives Lost to Overdose in Chester County

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County's Department of Drug and Alcohol Services will host "Night of Light" on Monday, Aug. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse in West Chester, in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day. The event will feature a luminary ceremony honoring both those who have died of substance use disorder and those currently working toward recovery, along with speakers and resource tables offering information on local treatment services. As part of the observance, 57 flags representing county residents who died of accidental overdoses in 2025 will be displayed at the Historic Courthouse, the Chester County Justice Center and the Government Services Center. County officials highlighted a roughly 20 percent decline in overdose deaths over the past four years, crediting collaboration among county departments, treatment providers, families and community partners, while stressing that eliminating overdose deaths entirely remains the goal. More information is available through the county's website or its Information and Referral line.
Taste, Learn and Explore at Bondsville Mill's Pawpaw Festival
DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Bondsville Mill Historic Park in Downingtown will host its third annual Pawpaw Festival on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., celebrating the native pawpaw tree and its fruit. Attendees can sample pawpaw-based treats, browse a farmer's market featuring pawpaw products, and make a keepsake craft using pawpaw seeds. The festival will also offer several nature programs, including a Beaver Creek stream assessment led by Stroud Water Research Center educators, a chance to speak with members of the Chester County Beekeepers Association at the park's hives, and an opportunity to see and possibly tag Monarch caterpillars and butterflies. Organizers noted that both of the mill's parking lots will remain open despite an ongoing nearby detour. More details are available at bondsvillemillpark.org.
