Boot Road Bridge Shutdown Starts for 12-Month Construction Project

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Boot Road Bridge closes starting today, for a year-long bridge replacement project over Amtrak’s Keystone Corridor. Traffic will be detoured via Routes 322, 30, and Quarry Road. The closure is expected to last through fall 2026.

WCU’s Concert on the Quad Returns to Kick Off Fall Semester and Football Season

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University will kick off the fall semester and football season with its ninth annual Concert on the Quad on Friday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by the Wells School of Music, the free outdoor concert will include performances by the Golden Rams Marching Band, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Criterions Jazz Ensemble.
The event has moved to an earlier date this year to align with the university's opening weekend and promote its year-round calendar of public music programs. In addition to the musical lineup, the evening will offer inclusive features like ASL interpretation, large print programs, trained volunteers, and sensory-friendly resources through WCU’s N.I.C.E. initiative. Guests can also enjoy interactive elements such as therapy dogs, an instrument petting zoo, and a visit from Rammy, the university mascot.
Chambers Lake Boat Ramp to Close Sept. 13 for Emergency Training

COATESVILLE, PA — Chester County officials have announced a temporary closure of the Chambers Lake boat ramp parking area and nearby shoreline on Saturday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The area will be used for an emergency response training exercise simulating a water-based search and rescue. Local emergency responders, in coordination with the Chester County Ranger team, will conduct the drill using training dummies and specialized equipment. The public is encouraged to avoid the area during the exercise.
Educators and Lawmakers Meet to Highlight Budget Gap Despite Boost in School Funding
COATESVILLE, PA — At Rainbow Elementary on September 4, Children First convened educators, administrators, school board members, and lawmakers for a frank discussion about education funding in Chester County. Districts including Coatesville, Downingtown, Avon Grove, Kennett, and Oxford received an initial $9 million in adequacy funding last year after long-standing disparities. However, estimated funding needs still exceed $70 million.
The conversation revealed the strain of budget deficits. Downingtown faced a $4 million shortfall, prompting layoffs, even as the district implemented full-time kindergarten. Avon Grove highlighted rising costs associated with special education and English language learning in its rural areas. Coatesville officials voiced concerns about the immense charter school funding burden, currently at $74 million
Two New Ways for Local Businesses to Shine in the Downingtown Local Pulse

Downingtown is built on the strength of its small businesses — the shops, restaurants, services, and makers that give our community its unique character. Now, there are two new ways for those businesses to get in front of thousands of engaged local readers through the Downingtown Local Pulse.
We’re introducing two promotional programs designed to give businesses year-round visibility and meaningful connections with our audience:
1. Partner Program
This package gives businesses a featured listing in our Local Business Directory, making it easy for residents to find and support you. Partners also receive:
A monthly Business Spotlight article that tells your story.
A pinned article on our website for maximum visibility.
Exposure to our massive Facebook audience, with each feature shared across our highly engaged social channels.
2. Patron Program
For businesses ready to take their visibility to the next level, the Patron Program includes everything in the Partner Program plus:
A top-level ad placement one issue a month, ensuring your brand stays front and center.
Both programs are built to keep your business in the local conversation month after month — not just as an ad, but as a valued part of the community’s story.
Whether you’re a family-run shop, a growing startup, or a well-established local favorite, these programs offer an affordable way to boost your visibility while supporting the Downingtown Local Pulse’s mission to celebrate the people and businesses that make our town special.

Building Business by Building Trust: Free Trade Networking’s Local Impact
DOWNINGTOWN, PA — In this episode, Jenny Leigh sits down with Pat Dicola, the visionary behind Free Trade Networking. Launched during the pandemic, Free Trade has grown from a small Zoom group into more than 30 in-person chapters across the region, including Downingtown. Unlike traditional networking groups, Free Trade emphasizes collaboration over quotas, one-member-per-category chapters, and strong ties to local nonprofits. The result is a community of small business owners who not only support each other but also give back—making Free Trade a fast-growing hub for both business and service in Chester County.
