Discovery in Downingtown May Reveal New Chapter of Duffy’s Cut Tragedy

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A mass grave containing the remains of as many as 120 Irish railroad workers from 1832 has likely been discovered at Northwood Cemetery in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The discovery, announced by the Duffy’s Cut Project, comes nearly 20 years after a similar grave was found in Malvern. Ground-penetrating radar revealed anomalies that led to the excavation, uncovering human bones and teeth in an area that predates the cemetery by more than 30 years. Researchers suspect the site is linked to the Duffy’s Cut tragedy, where cholera—and possibly violence—claimed the lives of Irish immigrants building the Pennsylvania Railroad. The team plans to respectfully rebury the remains and erect a Celtic cross memorial. They also continue seeking funding for DNA analysis, aiming to identify some of the long-lost workers and honor their contributions to America’s early industrial expansion.

Chester County Leaders Host Forum on Economic Outlook

WEST CHESTER, PA — At a time of global economic uncertainty, Chester County government and business leaders hosted Economic Crossroads: Where We Are and Where We’re Headed, a forum aimed at assessing the region’s economic outlook. Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Dr. Mark Zandi offered expert analysis on trade tensions, tariffs, labor markets, inflation, and recession risks. His presentation provided timely insights as local businesses confront rising costs and an evolving global economy. More than 100 business owners, policymakers, and community leaders attended, reflecting widespread concern about the pressures facing Chester County’s economy. Officials emphasized the importance of balanced economic policy that supports growth, domestic production, and local agriculture. The event, a joint effort by the Chester County Commissioners, Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, and Chester County Economic Development Council, underscored the need for collaboration as the county navigates complex economic terrain.

Coatesville Police Seek Suspects After Credit Card Skimmer Found

COATESVILLE, PA — Police in Coatesville are investigating after a skimming device was discovered on a credit card machine at Ctown Supermarket on East Lincoln Highway. Surveillance footage from June 5 shows two men placing the illegal device, which captures customers' card information for fraudulent use. The Coatesville Police Department responded to the discovery the following day and is now seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects. Credit card skimmers can be used to steal data for unauthorized purchases or to create counterfeit cards, and may include hidden cameras to capture PIN numbers.
