Coatesville School Board Weighs 3.5% Tax Hike to Offset Budget Gap

COATESVILLE, PA — Facing a projected $11.9 million budget gap for the upcoming school year, the Coatesville Area School Board is evaluating a plan that includes a 3.5% property tax increase and a $6.5 million withdrawal from the district’s fund balance. The proposed changes would raise the millage rate to 44.364, costing the average homeowner about $300 more annually. The district cites cybercharter school costs and an outdated state funding formula as key contributors to the shortfall. Officials emphasized that further cuts would negatively affect student services. A final vote on the budget is scheduled for June 10.
Chester County Removed as ‘Sanctuary City’ After List Quietly Disappears

Chester County Commissioners
WEST CHESTER, PA — A Department of Homeland Security list labeling Chester County as a “sanctuary” jurisdiction has disappeared from the agency’s website amid growing criticism and pushback from local officials. The list had placed Chester and two nearby counties in the crosshairs of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. County commissioners strongly denied the designation, stating they have never adopted sanctuary policies and remain in full cooperation with ICE. Homeland Security officials said the list is being reviewed, while Secretary Kristi Noem defended its criteria on national television. The controversy echoes a similar debate in 2020, when a letter supporting vetted refugee resettlement was misinterpreted as a sanctuary declaration, a misunderstanding amplified again by local political groups.
