Decades in the Making, Brandywine Battlefield Study Completed Ahead of Semiquincentennial

CHADDS FORD, PA — More than two centuries after the Battle of Brandywine helped shape the course of the American Revolution, a 12-year effort to study and preserve the battlefield has come to fruition. Local planners, historians, and preservationists have unveiled the Brandywine Battlefield Phased Study, a three-part compendium detailing the geography, troop movements, and events of the 1777 conflict across a 35,000-acre region.

Led by the Chester County Planning Commission and Delaware County Planning Department, and supported by the Brandywine Battlefield Task Force, the study used historic maps, property records, and foreign military journals to reconstruct the battlefield. Many original features remain intact and are now clearly marked, offering a richer picture of the past.

Funded through National Park Service grants, the study supports long-term preservation and planning efforts as the area prepares for two milestone anniversaries—the nation's semiquincentennial in 2026 and the battle’s 250th anniversary in 2027. Community events and an interactive map are now available online for those interested in learning more.

Ingleside Golf Club Hosts Armed Forces Day Fundraiser for Veterans

CALN TWP — To mark Armed Forces Day, Ingleside Golf Club in Caln Township is inviting golfers to participate in a fundraising contest designed to support America’s veterans. Scheduled for Saturday, May 17, the “Closest to the Pin” challenge on Hole #4 is open to any player who books a tee time and opts in on the day of play.

The event, coordinated in partnership with Elite Fundraising, reflects Ingleside’s designation as a “Hero Course,” a title reserved for courses committed to veteran support efforts. Participants will be eligible to win a range of prizes, including pro shop gift cards and all-inclusive vacation packages.

This initiative follows a similar event held on Vietnam Veterans Day, which raised over $1,300. The golf club aims to surpass that amount while continuing to spotlight the needs of military veterans through community-based recreation and fundraising.

East Brandywine to Plant 1,776 Flags in Memorial Day Tribute

EAST BRANDYWINE TWP — East Brandywine Township will continue a nearly two-decade tradition this month with its 19th annual Memorial Day tribute, titled “In Memory of Many and In Honor of All.” On Tuesday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m., residents will gather at Community Park to place 1,776 American flags in recognition of those who gave their lives in military service.

This act of remembrance has become a hallmark of the township’s calendar, offering a way for residents to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day through collective action. The sea of flags, planted by many hands, stands as a powerful local tribute to national sacrifice.

Dowlin Forge Bridge to Close May 17 for PennDOT Repairs

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — PennDOT will temporarily close the Dowlin Forge Bridge in Uwchlan Township on Saturday, May 17, as part of a series of repair efforts on the aging structure. The bridge, situated near Route 282, will remain closed for the day while crews carry out scheduled maintenance designed to ensure its continued safety and functionality.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured along Shelmire Road and Dorlan Mill Road. Motorists traveling through the area should expect minor delays and are encouraged to plan alternate routes or allow extra time to reach their destinations.
