Digging Into the Past: Genealogy Event Offers Tools to Trace Family Roots

EXTON, PA — Residents interested in tracing their family roots are invited to a free genealogy research program hosted by Chester County Library and the Chester County Archives on May 22. The session will cover the basics of genealogical research, with practical instruction from local experts on using county records and library databases such as Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest. The program, held in the library's Struble Room, begins at 6 p.m. and is open to adults. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

Rite Aid Shutters Final Chester County Locations in Nationwide Downsizing

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Rite Aid is closing all of its Chester County stores amid a nationwide effort to reduce its retail footprint following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company is putting up 1,244 properties for sale, including eight stores in Chester County. All local sites are leased and will be closed. While layoffs have already begun in New Jersey, Pennsylvania has not yet received formal WARN Act filings. The closures underscore the growing challenges facing retail pharmacies, which continue to face low reimbursement rates and operational pressure.

Young Pianists Take Center Stage at WCU’s 35th Annual National Competition

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Wells School of Music at West Chester University is preparing to welcome nearly 80 young musicians for its 35th Annual Pre-Collegiate National Piano Competition. Taking place May 17–18, the event includes performances from students ages 9–18 who will compete for over $5,500 in prize money. While competition rounds are closed to the public, two events on Sunday, May 18—a master class at 11:30 a.m. and a Winners’ Recital and Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m.—are open and free to all attendees. Founded by WCU’s Anita Greenlee and now led by Dr. Igor Resnianski, the competition continues to grow, offering a platform for emerging talent and hopes for future expansion into collegiate-level participation and enhanced programming.
