Innovation in Action: WCU Competition Bridges Science and Entrepreneurship
WEST CHESTER, PA — Three biomedical engineering undergraduates from West Chester University have captured first place in the undergraduate division of the university’s 13th Annual Business Idea Competition. Their startup, Cell-U Therapeutics, is based on a patented T cell-engaging immunotherapy designed to treat cancers in immunocompromised patients. The students, supported by mentorship and real-world experience from a WCU entrepreneurship course, will present their pitch at the Life Science Innovation Shark Tank hosted by the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.
The competition, organized by WCU’s Cottrell Entrepreneurship Center in collaboration with the Keiretsu Forum Mid-Atlantic and the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, awarded the team a $5,000 prize and an internship opportunity to continue developing their business.
In the graduate and alumni track, 2022 WCU graduate Matt Zwilgmeyer took top honors for designing a stainless-steel water bottle with a spring-loaded, one-handed cap, aimed at improving hydration for athletes and people with physical limitations.
The event highlighted the university’s growing emphasis on experiential learning and innovation, offering students the opportunity to merge academic study with entrepreneurial practice and pitch their ideas to industry professionals and investors.
