Philadelphia Man Sentenced for Leading Multi-County Gun Trafficking Ring

NORRISTOWN, PA — Larry B. Williams, 42, of Philadelphia, was sentenced Thursday to 22½ to 45 years in prison for leading a gun trafficking network that distributed nearly 100 firearms across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Lehigh, and Philadelphia counties. Williams, barred from possessing guns due to prior felony convictions, used straw buyers to acquire weapons, many of which remain untraced and have been linked to other crimes.
Despite pleading guilty in 2024, Williams later attempted to withdraw his plea, claiming innocence, but the court upheld the original agreement. Authorities uncovered that members of the network purchased or attempted to purchase 117 firearms, many at gun shows. The sentence concludes a sweeping investigation involving multiple local and federal agencies. Six other co-defendants await sentencing for their roles in the operation.
Contractor Ordered to Pay $1.7M Over Harmful Social Media Post
EAST GOSHEN TWP — In a rare defamation verdict, a Chester County jury has awarded $1.7 million to East Goshen resident Lionel Vargas, who sued a local contractor for making false and damaging statements online. The dispute began after Vargas posted a negative review of pool work performed by Great Valley Landscaping Pools and Restoration, claiming delays and poor quality. The company’s owner, John Amen, responded with a post defending his work but also included personal accusations about Vargas.
Vargas denied the claims and filed suit in 2024, citing defamation and false light. His attorneys argued that Amen’s public response, posted to a site with a large audience, unfairly portrayed Vargas and caused lasting reputational harm. The jury sided unanimously with Vargas, marking one of the few instances in Chester County where a defamation case has resulted in a multimillion-dollar award.
Survey Shows Strong Support for Return of Passenger Trains to Borough
WEST CHESTER, PA — A recent survey revealed overwhelming support among local business owners to see the return of passenger rail service, who believe renewed service would drive customer traffic and expand hiring options. The proposed plan includes a commuter rail shuttle serving West Chester, West Chester University, Westtown, and Cheyney University.
The project’s backers are taking a flexible approach to equipment and funding, exploring the use of refurbished trains initially, with a transition to cleaner, battery-powered models over time. While some council members remain skeptical, citing travel time and cost concerns, the plan’s supporters say it offers a valuable opportunity to improve regional transit and strengthen the borough’s economy.
