Innovate Chester County Moves Forward With First Round of Resident-Driven Projects

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County has begun implementing ideas from its Innovate Chester County initiative, which enlisted more than 100 residents to help tackle complex issues in local government. The first wave of projects focuses on children’s mental health, affordable housing awareness, veterans resources, and enhancements to Chesco Connect, the county’s transit service.

Participants were selected from a public call for applications and divided into topic-specific work groups. After several months of meetings, each group submitted a slate of proposals, ranging from volunteer outreach programs to broad public education campaigns. County officials are moving forward with initiatives that can be implemented using existing resources while exploring partnerships and funding avenues for more complex recommendations. Rooted in History: Chester County Distributes Native Trees in Honor of Humphry Marshall

WEST BRADFORD, PA — Chester County is continuing its annual tradition of celebrating native plant life and local history through the Native Spring Tree Giveaway, an initiative organized by the Humphry Marshall Fund at the Chester County History Center. Named after the influential 18th-century botanist who authored one of the earliest American works on native trees, the program serves as both a tribute to Marshall’s legacy and a call to environmental action.

Residents of West Bradford and Thornbury Townships will receive free saplings—either Swamp White Oaks or Eastern Redbuds—this spring. The 150 trees are donated by Bartlett Tree Experts and will be accompanied by educational materials that connect the plant species to Marshall’s seminal work, Arbustrum Americanum, published in 1785.

Deliveries are scheduled for April 22–23, just in time for Arbor Day. The goal, organizers say, is to spark a deeper appreciation for the region’s ecological roots and inspire residents to care for the environment in ways that resonate beyond a single season. More info at WestBradford.org

Homeowners Invited to Share Insights in Penn State Septic System Study

MALVERN, PA — Penn State Extension is inviting Pennsylvania residents who use on-lot septic systems to participate in a research survey aimed at strengthening wastewater treatment practices across the state. The study seeks to better understand how homeowners maintain and care for their septic systems, with the goal of identifying knowledge gaps and service needs that may exist statewide.

Participants can join the study by calling 814-863-4622 or visiting extension.psu.edu/septic-system-survey. The survey is brief and confidential, and the results will be used to shape tools and strategies for improving wastewater management in rural and suburban communities throughout Pennsylvania.

West Chester University Launches Mental Health Support Program for Jurors

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University has partnered with the Philadelphia court system to offer a first-of-its-kind mental health support program for jurors experiencing distress after completing their service. Spearheaded by the university’s Community Mental Health Services (CMHS) clinic, the program began earlier this April and provides free, confidential phone sessions to jurors dealing with anxiety, trauma, or emotional stress following either jury duty or jury selection.

The program, called After-Service Support for Jurors, includes three 30-minute telephone sessions conducted by licensed psychologists or supervised doctoral students trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA). While the support does not constitute therapy, it helps jurors process their experience and connect to further resources if needed.
