Overnight Student Fundraiser Brings in $45,766 for Pediatric Cancer Fight

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Students across the Downingtown Area School District came together for Cam-A-Thon, a 12-hour overnight fundraiser held in memory of former student Cameron Evans, who died of leukemia in 2011. The event raised $45,766.41 to support pediatric cancer research through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Held from Friday evening into Saturday morning, the event featured dancing, sports tournaments, Zumba, and other activities that kept energy high while focusing on a meaningful cause. Cam-A-Thon has become an annual tradition rooted in a campaign called Cure4Cam, started by Cameron’s friends during his treatment.

Over time, the fundraiser evolved into a district-wide effort organized in partnership with Downingtown STEM Academy and Downingtown High School West. The event reflects the district’s emphasis on student leadership, community engagement, and building a culture of empathy and service.

Donations are still being accepted to support pediatric cancer research and continue Cameron’s legacy.

Chester County Hosts Regional Civics Bee; Top Students Move to State Finals

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell and Eric Roe recently served as judges at the 2025 Regional Civics Bee, where middle school students from the region competed in a test of civic knowledge and public leadership.

Top awards went to Gautam M. of Lionville Middle School, Kriti K. of Charles F. Patton Middle School, and Logan M. of the Souderton Charter School Collaborative. These students will now move on to the Pennsylvania State Finals in June. The winner of that round will advance to the national championship in Washington, D.C.

Horticulturist to Lead Talk on Native Plants That Deter Deer

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — East Brandywine Township will host an evening seminar on April 11 focused on helping residents protect their gardens and landscapes from deer damage. Gregory D. Tepper, a horticulturist, author, and board member of the Bondsville Mill Arboretum, will lead the event.

The presentation will explore native plant selections and practical methods for deterring deer in home gardens. Tepper, who works with the Arboretum at Laurel Hill in Philadelphia, will also offer signed copies of his book, Deer-Resistant Native Plants for the Northeast.

The event is sponsored by the Bondsville Mill Arboretum and Gardens and will be held in the Meeting Hall of the East Brandywine Township Municipal Building. A $20 donation is suggested to support ongoing community gardening programs. Space is limited, and advance registration is recommended. Register by sending an email to Sandy Moser at [email protected].

Open House Set for April 24 to Discuss Emergency Preparedness

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County is seeking community feedback as it works to update its Hazard Mitigation Plan for 2026. The plan outlines strategies to reduce the region’s vulnerability to natural and man-made hazards, including flooding, winter storms, and transportation incidents.

An open house will be held on Thursday, April 24, at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus, where residents can learn more about the initiative and contribute their own experiences and ideas. The event is part of a broader planning process aimed at strengthening the county’s resilience and enhancing public safety.

The updated plan will help guide future infrastructure investments and emergency response efforts. Residents unable to attend in person are encouraged to visit the plan’s website to review details and share feedback online.
