Downingtown Library to Launch Spring Book Sale on April 4

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Library will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 4, to prepare for the start of its Friends of the Library Spring Used Book Sale, which opens to the public at 4 p.m. Though library services will be unavailable during sale hours, visitors will have access to a wide selection of donated books, with proceeds supporting the library’s programming.

The sale continues through April 19. Both cash and card will be accepted through April 6; cash only from April 7 onward. Due to expected crowds, large containers are not allowed, and capacity limits may be enforced. Organizers credit the success of the sale to the strong support of the Downingtown community and the generosity of local donors.

USDA Cancels $250,000 of Orders From The Chester County Food Bank

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Chester County Food Bank is confronting a major funding blow after the USDA canceled a $250,000 food shipment from its Emergency Food Assistance Program. The canceled items, including key proteins and dairy products, were slated for families earning up to 185% of the federal poverty level.

Replacing this shipment at retail cost would put an even greater strain on the nonprofit, which already distributes millions of pounds of food to tens of thousands of residents annually. The loss adds to a recent $145,000 funding cut from a state-local food program that had helped sustain local farms while feeding the hungry.

Yellow Springs Art Show Returns with 4,000 Works by Local Artists

CHESTER SPRINGS, PA — The annual Yellow Springs Art Show will run from April 26 through May 11, bringing thousands of artworks to the historic Lincoln building in Chester Springs. This juried exhibition features over 220 local and regional artists and draws more than 7,000 visitors each year. Organized by Historic Yellow Springs, the event supports arts education, historic preservation, and community conservation projects. Admission is free, and several special events—including an Opening Gala, a Happy Hour, and a Mother's Day celebration—will round out the two-week show. More info here

Chester County Planning Commission to Lead Sustainability Education Event

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University will host the 2025 Chester County Sustainability Summit and Expo this spring, bringing together residents, environmental experts, and local contractors for an afternoon of workshops, networking, and community engagement.

Organized by the Chester County Planning Commission, the event will focus on practical solutions for incorporating sustainable practices at home and in business—from solar panels and geothermal systems to composting and ecological lawn care. Attendees will also have a chance to speak with neighbors who have implemented these projects, and meet contractors who can assist with installations.

Beyond the technical guidance, the summit will serve as a space for civic connection, offering pathways for community members to get involved in local environmental initiatives. Registration is open to the public and can be completed online.
