$50,000 State Grant to Help A Haven Reach More Grieving Families

EXTON, PA — A Haven, a nonprofit based in Chester County that provides grief counseling and education to children and families, will receive a $50,000 grant from the state. The funding will enable the organization to expand school-based support groups, enhance community outreach, and update its Exton facility. Offering all services free of charge, A Haven supported dozens of families and ran grief education programs in multiple school districts last year. The grant is expected to help the organization extend its reach and meet the growing need for accessible grief support in the region.

THORNDALE, PA — Herr Foods Inc. has been selected as the 2025 recipient of Handi-Crafters’ Best Friend Award, an honor given annually to a business that demonstrates exceptional commitment to supporting the nonprofit’s mission. For more than a decade, Herr Foods has partnered with Handi-Crafters on co-packing projects, allowing the nonprofit’s participants—individuals with disabilities—to contribute to the packaging of over 2.5 million snack products. The partnership stands as an example of how local businesses can make a long-term impact by investing in inclusive employment initiatives. The award will be presented at Handi-Crafters’ Spring Benefit on May 1.
Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance to Be Honored for Beautification Efforts

COATESVILLE, PA — On Saturday, March 29, the Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance will be recognized with the 2025 Community Pride Award by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful for its leadership in beautifying the city and fostering civic pride. The award ceremony, held at the Alliance’s downtown office, will be followed by a community cleanup event inviting residents and volunteers to remove litter from city streets, parks, and public spaces. The initiative aligns with the statewide “Pick Up Pennsylvania” campaign and the Great American Cleanup. As it celebrates a decade of work, the Alliance continues to play a key role in Coatesville’s revitalization efforts through public-private collaboration, with a focus on environmental stewardship and inclusive community development.
EV Bus Purchase on Hold as Unionville-Chadds Ford Awaits Federal Funds
KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Uncertainty over federal grant funding has led the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board to delay a decision on purchasing new school buses. The district had hoped to buy five electric buses, supported by a $1 million EPA grant and $312,000 in additional state funds. However, with the federal funds currently frozen, the board must now consider purchasing four diesel buses instead, which would cost $728,000 and could be delivered in time for the next school year. The electric option would also require nearly $200,000 in charging infrastructure upgrades. A motion to give the administration authority to make the final decision based on funding status was overridden, with the board opting instead to reconvene on March 28 for a final vote.
