Bradford Heights Students Welcome Gritty for ‘Food and Fridges’ Initiative

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Excitement filled the halls of Bradford Heights Elementary as students welcomed Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot, for a special event tied to the “Food and Fridges” initiative. The program, a partnership between the Flyers organization, Wegmans, and the Downingtown Area School District, introduced a new branded refrigerator stocked with nutritious snacks to support students, particularly those in the BRIDGE after-school program. Sponsored by the Downingtown Community Education Foundation, the program provides academic support and enrichment opportunities beyond the school day.

With representatives from Wegmans and the Flyers helping to stock the fridge, the event underscored the importance of community partnerships in addressing student needs. School officials emphasized the lasting impact of such initiatives, ensuring that students have the resources to focus on their education.

Unionville-Chadds Ford Faces Federal Complaint Alleging Religious Discrimination

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — A federal complaint alleging religious discrimination has been filed against the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, escalating a series of legal disputes. The complaint, submitted by Birmingham Township resident Chad Williams through the Pacific Justice Institute, claims the district has restricted access to public records and discriminated against Christian parents. Williams, who previously filed complaints with the state over COVID-19 policies and student surveys, argues that school officials have obstructed his ability to review materials and engage in discussions about curriculum content.

His concerns come amid broader tensions within the district, including a recent complaint from nearly 100 residents regarding a proposed $120 million middle school construction project. Williams has also questioned the state’s ability to investigate his claims, suggesting conflicts of interest may be preventing oversight.

School officials have acknowledged receiving the complaints but have not issued substantive responses. Superintendent John Sanville, set to retire in July, has referred the complaints to the school board, which insists it is following established procedures. Meanwhile, the legal battles have fueled growing frustration within the community, with residents voicing concerns at increasingly contentious board meetings. More details at Chadds Ford Live

Elbow Lane Road Closures as PECO Utility Upgrades Continue

WEST PIKELAND TWP — As part of PECO’s $100 million System 2020 project, work along Elbow Lane in West Pikeland Township continues with efforts to enhance the local electric grid. The project includes installing new utility poles, upgrading electrical wiring, and clearing trees that pose potential hazards to power lines. Road closures will be in effect from March 3–8, affecting the stretch from Pikeland to the curve, as crews remove trees exceeding 100 feet in height. Once that phase is complete, work will shift to replacing utility poles along the roadway.

In addition to PECO’s upgrades, a culvert lining project at the intersection of Elbow Lane and Yellow Springs Road will begin on March 6 at 7:30 a.m. The work is expected to reinforce roadway stability, and restrictions will be lifted once the installation is complete and inspected.
