Jury Unable to Agree in Homicide Case, Leaving Fate of Defendant Uncertain

A wooden gavel.

WEST CHESTER, PA — The trial of Quinzell Mickey, accused of killing William Stafford during a late-night argument outside their Chester County apartment complex, ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to agree on a verdict. The prosecution portrayed Mickey as an enraged gunman who shot Stafford, an unarmed man, out of anger. The defense contended that Mickey believed Stafford had a weapon and fired in self-defense.

Jurors deliberated for two days but remained deadlocked on first-degree and third-degree murder, as well as voluntary manslaughter. They did, however, convict Mickey of illegal firearm possession.

The incident unfolded after a night of drinking, when Stafford, reportedly intoxicated, demanded that Mickey drive him to Philadelphia. The argument turned physical, and in the chaos, Mickey fired three shots. Stafford died at the scene, and Mickey fled, spending four months as a fugitive before surrendering to authorities.

With the prospect of a retrial, Mickey remains in Chester County Prison. Prosecutors say they intend to move forward with the case.

Uwchlan Residents Name Township’s New Paver ‘Pavezilla’

UWCHLAN TWP — Uwchlan Township’s new paving machine has a name: Pavezilla. Chosen through a public vote, the Weiler P385C paver will assist with road maintenance and improvement projects. Township officials thanked residents for their participation and encouraged them to keep an eye out for Pavezilla as it gets to work.

Chester County Landfill to Convert Methane into Renewable Energy

WEST GROVE, PA — In a move to reduce emissions and generate renewable energy, the Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA) is teaming up with French energy company Waga Energy to transform landfill methane into usable natural gas. The project, based at SECCRA’s West Grove landfill, will extract methane from decomposing waste, refine it, and inject it into the local gas grid.

SECCRA’s initiative goes further by converting waste gas into energy that can heat approximately 4,400 homes. This represents a significant increase from the landfill’s current system, which generates electricity but still releases some emissions.

The new system, which avoids combustion, is expected to prevent 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. If finalized, the renewable natural gas will be distributed through PECO’s network. The project is slated for completion in 2026.

East Brandywine Fire Company Secures $94,000 Grant

EAST BRANDYWINE TWP — The East Brandywine Fire Company has secured $94,000 in state funding to enhance its rescue operations, a move that comes as local communities continue to expand. The grant, awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, will be used to outfit a new rescue vehicle with specialized equipment, including a Res-Q-Jack stabilization kit and battery-powered rescue tools.

The fire company serves residents in East Brandywine, West Brandywine, and Upper Uwchlan townships, areas that have experienced significant growth in recent years. Officials say the additional equipment will improve response times and efficiency while allowing existing rescue tools to be deployed across the department’s fleet.
